Making a Star with Dr. Shey Cunha

One of the most incredible parts of my job is becoming an ally to my clients. Not only am I humbled to be able to work with incredible businesses, but women-owned businesses are my favorite! During the start of my business, Dr. Shey Cunha reached out to me with such a vulnerable idea: to rebrand her services and go off on her own adventure in offering psychological services for children.

Star Psychology was born! I was able to help Dr. Cunha with the development of her logo, website, and provide guidance on her social media presence. During this absolutely amazing experience working together, we consulted on ways to improve her business for Q1 2022.

Diving into the realm of e-books, Dr. Cunha and I worked together to develop an informative and eye-catching e-Book to live 24/7 on her website! This allows Dr. Cunha to continue working with her patients, but also has a resource for caregivers who may not be ready to leap into a psychologist.

I was able to speak with Dr. Cunha to go over her experience launching her latest e-Book, Your Child is a Star.

Jasmine: Why did an e-Book call out to you?

Dr. Cunha: I have a desire to teach caregivers how to be their child’s first therapist. And sometimes, although there are amazingly qualified professionals in our area, parents want to feel empowered to help their children navigate their day-to-day life. So, with the support of teachers and mental health professionals, children can also communicate their feelings in a safe and open environment with easily accessible tools. I also wanted to prepare parents for meetings with a professional if there are concerns with their child’s development. Sometimes, there’s so much going on that we lose track or forget something important during an intake appointment.

An e-book is easy to pull up on your phone, and they’re practical and low-prep activities that are meaningful. Additionally, I wanted to build upon my brand as a school psychologist and parent child interaction therapist.

Jasmine: What content did you feel was crucial to promote?

Dr. Cunha: Parents can use this easy-to-read resource to gather their thoughts and narrow down any concerns when seeking psychological services for their child. The activities don’t take too much time away from your day, and the positive attention children experience when participating in activities makes a difference for building strong emotional relationships with their caretakers.

Jasmine: What do you love most about the Lakeland community?

Dr. Cunha: My family and I moved to Lakeland about three years ago and completely fell in love with it! Even though we spent a lot of the time in a pandemic, the beautiful serenity and friendliness of the people here have really inspired us to continue establishing roots in the area. That’s why opening my practice in Lakeland and expanding to work with those who are seeking testing and/or therapy just made sense to me. We will be here for the long term and hope to provide our kids great life experiences!

Jasmine: How was it working with another local business to accomplish this goal?

Dr. Cunha: Jasmine was SO REFRESHING to work with! She didn’t rush me through the process! She navigates my vision of the e-book with me and did not pressure me through the content development. She felt more like a friend than anything, which makes me want to keep coming back with new ideas! The thing I probably loved most was her engagement and support. She was like “yaaasssss” the entire way through. You can’t get that just anywhere.

Jasmine: How have you used social media to tell your story?

Dr. Cunha: I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with and reaching audiences in the local markets. By being active on social media, I’m able to encourage and inform. I can also share about my e-book to inform and encourage amazing caregivers!

Jasmine: What lesson have you learned from the process of the past few years developing your own business and getting out into the world?

Dr. Cunha: Much like a star, which is an infinite design, life will be full of bumps and curves. However, the way to find success is to keep going. A star shape connects each part together seamlessly — much like life if we can set goals and strive to connect. Building this business has taught me that I can’t do it alone. I need people on my team who share my vision and passion for equipping caretakers to be their child’s first therapist, providing mental health services for children and young adults, and alleviating the stress of testing in order to develop effective treatment plans to help someone keep going.

Also, my late father used to call me his little star and that will forever be in my heart and in my mind as I fully embrace this helping profession.

Dr. Cunha was able to walk away with an e-Book she was proud of that kept a consistent look of her branding efforts and stayed true to her brand voice. These elements are important to keep your brand looking connected and inspire people to recognize you as an expert in your field. During this time of design and development, we were able to continue using our working relationship to improve on ideas, connect beautiful design, and think of Dr. Cunha’s audience first.
